5 Simple Steps to Training Your Dog

When you bring home a new puppy, the hardest task is trying to figure out how to train them. You want your dog to be happy and healthy, but you also want it to know what you expect from it. Training a dog doesn't have to be difficult or stressful- all it takes is some time and patience! In this blog post, we'll cover 5 simple steps that can help get your pup on the right track.

Here are the 5 simple steps to help get you on your way to an obedient puppy!

- 1) Be patient but consistent

Puppies need consistency to learn anything. Just like it may take us a few times to learn something it is the same with puppies.

Patience is key. Puppies want to run, play, have fun, and not to mention they also get distracted easily. So keep this in mind when you are in the training process! It will be easy to get frustrated and that is why it is important to have patience. When you get upset your puppy might get scared and confused because they don't know exactly what it is you want them to do yet.

- 2) Use positive reinforcement

Puppies learn with positive reinforcement. When you get angry with them when they do something wrong, they will be confused. Instead, repeat the training and process until they do it right, and as soon as they do give them a treat and praise them!

- 3) Praise the pup for good behavior

Again it is very important that every time they do something right or good you praise them by saying good job or good boy/ good girl and petting them.

- 4) Don't punish bad behavior and be sure to correct it gently

When they do something wrong it is okay to give them a light pat and use the word “no”, eventually they will associate the word "no" with the pat on the butt and learn it's not something they should do. Also again reward good behavior, this helps the most in training!

- 5) Keep training sessions short and sweet

Puppies lose focus and patience very easily and in a short amount of time, so each session needs to be short and sweet. This way the puppy doesn't get frustrated and despise training. If it is kept short the puppy will more likely be able to enjoy training and be able to go off and play afterward!
